Robert, I love that quote: “Women are beautiful when they are most natural.” Right on! I think it’s true, and it’s amazing what natural approaches to health–especially one’s intimate life with NFP–does for a marriage! There’s this great talk by Vicki Thorn called “The Biochemistry of Sex” which totally affirms this with science and anthropology.

I am very much in favour of Natural Family Planning for a number of reasons, but now I’ll have something to tell people who need the extra little push – just in case they’re striving to be green. I hate what hormonal contraceptives do to women’s bodies, and condoms seem to be a waste and a hastle, while with natural family planning, you get to know your body intimately. I haven’t used it personally because as soon as I became sexually active (when I got married), I had already decided that I wanted a baby whenever I was blessed with one. I got pregnant six months after my marriage, then seven months after my daughter was born, and then thirteen months after my son was born. I may not have used any birth control, including NFP, but I see the benefits both physically and emotionally and encourage women to look into it especially before going with hormonal methods. I agree – our fertility is a gift and we shouldn’t be afraid of it – it is a huge part of our womanhood and natural family planning just encourages us to get to know our bodies better.

I’m not a health nut, but I do think people pump their bodies with way too many drugs to change their bodies — but at what consequence? I don’t think there are any shortcuts. (I read recently that even teeth whiteners can cause long-term dental problems.) Of course, some pharmaceuticals are necessary for health reasons, but all the cosmetic stuff out there is awful — and that includes a lot of make-up. Women are most beautiful when they are most natural.
