[...] Full disclosure: I’m a Creighton fan, but I am not above a healthy discussion about its weak points, or the weak points of any NFP model. What bothers me about this post isn’t it’s critical approach–sharply critical, in fact–it is the way and tone in which it is done. This is in-fighting, which ticks me off because the NFP world has enough division and misunderstanding without things like this (See step 3 in Highly Effective Habits of NFP Promoters).
I just wanted to follow-up on my previous post to let you know that I just added my first NFP-specific post on my site. I plan to write many articles on the topic. Although my wife and I are very proud Catholics, my goal is to promote NFP to a larger audience so most (but not all) of my NFP posts will not be "religion-specific."

Instead, I want to share our personal journey to NFP, the benefits it brings to marriage, the health and environmental benefits, etc. with a few posts that focus on the moral side of things. I just know that many younger couples tend to tune out very quickly when religion or morals is your platform, and I really just more people to know about NFP and give it a chance.

When the deeply spiritual issues arise, I know to send them back here!

Thanks for the great article! We are a new CCL teaching couple and are looking forward to spreading the good news! We just started a new blog for our CCL chapter (habit #4)

http://ccldalharttx.blogspot.com/

We are hoping that the blog will help us stay connected to our students and make new connections with potential students and other NFP promoters/supporters.

Also in reference to habit #6, I couldn't agree with you more. I was a youth minister last year and we were teaching a Catholic curriculum to 7th graders about sexuality, and although it covered such topics as abortion, HIV, and masturbation, there was not a word about the Church's teaching on contaception and NFP! Needless to say, myself and the other woman teaching added a lesson about NFP. No details, just that it exists and why it differs from contraception and what the church teaches about contraception. Amazingly not a single girl in our class had ever heard of NFP! We are definately neglecting our youth.

Mamie - I absolutely agree with you about relying too much on couple testimony and needing to give more info about the scientific/sociologic aspects. I would be very interested to read what you wrote about that. AND I would love to talk with you more about giving Creighton presentations in high schools and colleges. I will be starting my training to be a Creighton practitioner in January. I have 2 teenage nieces and have been trying to find a way to give them the info without giving them too much info and that got me thinking about talking to other high schoolers and college students, but I just don't know where to start!

How does this work? Can you get my email address from this blog? I don't necessarily want to put it out there for everyone to see.

Thanks for the support and comments, Dustin. Blessings in your apostolate with engaged couples. Don't compromise on the beauty of Theology of the Body and free, total, faithful and fruitful love, but use your ingenuity and knowledge of the contraceptive conceit, too.

Feel free to email any time.

Mamie, glad to have such an ample and responsive comment.

About "bickering in-house". Yes, there is a certain element of collegiality and healthy competition that prompts growth. However, sin and judgement and uncharitable collegiality is disordered. And I've seen a lot of the latter. I've heard a lot of people from methods mis-quoting other methods' effectiveness, or saying negative things about other methods without really researching or dialoging about it. What I think will help is inter-method dialogues and fellowship, so teachers can have the space and friendship to communicate and understand eachother.

It's true about volunteers. Very few paid volunteers. This is such a constant struggle. We need a sweeping testimony, a film, a compilation of powerful things said to convince us of the centrality of the importance of the family and the cancer of contraception. We need a "Fishers of Men" (Grassroots Films) for NFP and Humanae Vitae! Perhaps then the Bishops will wake the heck up and hire a staff full of NFP Coordinators!

Excellent and informative article! My wife and I practice and promote NFP, primarily at Pre-Cana (marriage preparation) workshops. We are relatively young and we have contraception as part of our history and story, so we are able to relate fairly well to the engaged couples. However, many do remain closed-minded to the idea and I appreciate the information you have shared here, which may provide a few more tools for our discussions.

I'll second everything you say. With regard to presentations, we NFPers rely to heavily on couple testimonies. 'Tho worthwhile, we need to include, history, philosophy, sociology, stats, risks, etc. in our presentations. I did that in my engaged couple presentation which may be found on Scribd. However, these presentations need to be tested, evaluated and re-evaluated. I'm running into the problem that because nfp is more minstry than a paid position, there are few volunteers to review teaching material. This is very much needed. Since I'm relying on volunteeers, I'm learning patience... but if we had a committed staff that would put this in their work schedule, wow, we could go much faster.

As regard to secular presentations/wording, I've written a presentation on that and if I get the confidence to put that one up on scrbd, I will. I guess what I see we need is a group of on-line people who are interested in evaluating material. Whoever sets this up, I'd greatly appreciate it.

As far as bickering in-house... it's a problem. However, the competition has enabled the nfp movement to grow. It's difficult to snuff the nfp movement out, and that's the positive side to this problem. I don't think this problem will go away.

Working with teens/young single adults. Excellent suggestion. I give the Creighton Mode FeritlityCare Intros to upper classman in high school and to those who are in college. It's been well rec'd. In addition to working with this age group, I believe it is also important to work with my age group and older, those who are past their fertility years. This is a very ignorant group on what makes for a successful marriage and how nfp strengthens families. But they are very influential in the lives of their children and grandchildren. It's also a group that can recognize the errors of their ways, have probably already rec'd sacrament of Reconciliation for their "sins of their youth," and are just ready to be tapped for evangelization of their families and friends.

Thank you, for your suggestions. You and your website give me a boost. It is a lonely world in this apostolic work of ours... but hey... we've got Jesus, Mary and the saints in heaven behind us. It's time for us to make some noise about nfp---- some "joyful" noise!

Thank you,
This is an excellent article and I think we will come back to it many times in our own commitment to spreading the good news of Sex and Marriage.
We are a new teaching couple with CCL.
