My husband and I do a bit of traveling in odd places, and love this method of staying somewhere. It's the best way to be able to get really immersed in a culture, or to get to know the ins and out of the local cities. It's been very safe, and you can look at the reviews for areas. The name's a bit of a misnomer -- most hosts have a bed to offer, not just a couch. And, it's free! I don't know if this is an option you'll want to look at, but it might be something.
