The Lolek Young Adult group in Elm Grove will feature rockin’ speaker Vicki Thorn, founder of Project Rachel. Vicki’s topic will be “What they didn’t tell you in sex ed,” aka “What you didn’t learn in sex ed,” which is a talk we featured last February in the Diocese of Madison for our St. Therese Lecture series. I love Vicki Thorn, and I love her down to earth way of communicating science as common sense.

Vicki’s talk will cover the science of attraction and bonding and the impact of the Pill on wrong partner choice, how we are changed by our sexual partners, how women carry cells from every child they have ever had and men are hardwired for fatherhood during the pregnancy.

Elm Grove, Wis., I assume? Unfortunately a little far away for a weekday :(

I second your recommendation, though! I’ve heard her speak a number of times, and have taken things away every time. The first time I was blown over when she explained how some of my long-held assumptions about contraception and sexual relationships were a little inaccurate. My husband was so bowled over that he talked about it all day at work and ended up sharing one of her CDs with his boss, who listened to it with his wife. As someone who grew up in and has always been fascinated by the sciences, it really struck a chord with me.

Wow, the Kat & Paul are super vans of Vicki Thorn…I’m glad to hear that you like her so much, considering your background in science. After the Feb St. Therese Lecture last year, a few people from UW-Madison crowd thought she was too colloquial and not academic enough, skimming over the details in a haphazard way. While she was no Brad Wilcox or Janet Smith in terms of academic presentations, I thought her informality made her really accessible.

I’m glad Paul shared the CD with his boss. (I forgot where he works.) What was the response?

I’m loving this blog once more- some great posts and really interesting stuff. If only I had a job like yours I could do this stuff full time….

Thanks so much Robert. Keep the faith across the pond! I wish I had a job like mine, too! I haven’t been the family planning coordinator since last summer, and right now I’m unemployed, so keep me in your prayers! Btw, doesn’t your (Arch)diocese have a Family Life office?
