Janet Smith Debates Christine Gudorf
Holy Smokes! If ya’ll are going to be near Northern Colorado in late January, save the friggin’ date, because this is going to be an interesting dialogue of wits. Janet Smith, the the Father Michael J. McGivney Chair of Life Ethics at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit and consultor to the Pontifical Council on the Family, will be debating fellow Catholic professor, Dr. Christine Gudorf, a liberation theologian and second wave feminist of quasi-secular persuasion.
It will be *fascinating* to see how the questions are posed, and how the dialogue proceeds. Both of their expertise are theological, but their respective theological “languages” or understandings are worlds apart. If the debate involves questions of sociological and scientific proof–done. Smith’s got science and social science on her side.

Smith (who is not a theologian) will follow the same template she always does. It’s good, but you only need to hear it once.
Her opponent won’t be able to trip her up because her tactic is to say “height”, a contraction of all-right and then get right back to her talking points.
This happened throughout her debate with dissident Charlie Curran. Curran wanted to steer the debate back to contraception w/in marriage…Smith kept pausing, saying “height” and then getting back to her speech on extramarital sex.
It’s good fun but if you’ve been fighting the culture of death for any time, don’t expect to be enlightened.
She’ll be in Kansas City around then too. Can’t wait to hear her! Thanks for sharing this Jess!
any chance it will be recorded for those of us 1000s of miles away?
